MMBB’s Babies at Work Program Supports New Parents

National Breastfeeding Month: How MMBB’s Babies at Work Program Supports New Parents

In honor of National Breastfeeding Month, themed “Nourish, Sustain, Thrive,” we celebrate the importance of lactation support throughout the human life cycle. This year’s focus underscores the critical need to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding for families everywhere. At Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies (MMBB), our Babies at Work Program embodies this commitment, creating a nurturing environment for new parents.

Why Babies at Work?

Research highlights several benefits of allowing new parents to bring their babies to work:

  • Stronger Bonds: Being close helps deepen emotional connections between parents and their babies.
  • Health Advantages: Breastfeeding, supported by this program, enhances long-term health for both mother and child.
  • Reduced Stress: Lower stress levels lead to improved job satisfaction and overall well-being.
Juechee’s Experience

Juechee Yang, a member of our valued team, shares how the program has transformed her work-life balance. “Returning to work shortly after giving birth was overwhelming, but bringing my baby, Lysia, along has been incredibly beneficial. It has strengthened our bond, supported our breastfeeding journey, and provided me with much-needed peace of mind.”

Juechee’s hybrid role, combining remote and in-office work, aligns perfectly with the program’s flexibility. “The ability to work remotely and in the office has been fantastic. With a supportive team and the program’s flexibility, balancing professional and personal life has become much easier.”

Lara, a colleague at MMBB, adds, “Having Lysia in the office has been wonderful! My office is right next to Juechee’s, and hearing Lysia’s little coos throughout the day brings me joy. She’s not distracting at all, and it’s heartening to know that Juechee and her daughter are enjoying more precious bonding time as she transitions back to work.”

As Lysia grows more active, Juechee plans to have her parents take over babysitting once Lysia begins crawling. “I’m confident leaving her with my parents now that she’s older, especially after establishing my milk supply early on,” she explains. “I’m relieved not to worry about packing my breast pump or dealing with the hassle of cleaning pump parts at work.”

Program Benefits

For Employees:

  • Reduced Daycare Costs: Save on childcare expenses.

How It Works

Eligible employees can bring their infants to work until they are about six months old or until they are mobile. To participate, employees must complete specific forms and attend a pre-program meeting to ensure a smooth transition. For resources that include policy templates and FAQs see, Parenting in the Workplace Institute (babiesatwork.org).

Guidelines:
  • Safety First: Parents are responsible for their baby’s safety and minimizing work disruptions.
  • Designated Areas: Clean work areas are required, with private spaces provided for breastfeeding and milk expression.
In Conclusion

This National Breastfeeding Month, we honor the dedication of mothers and lactating parents and the organizations that support them. MMBB’s Babies at Work Program is a shining example of how fostering a supportive work environment aligns with the broader goal of promoting and sustaining breastfeeding.
