The Power of Donor Milk: Caleb’s Story
Hi, my name is Keeley! I was connected to the milk bank through M Health Fairview Masonic Hospital. My first son Caleb was born at 27 weeks and honestly, we had no idea what we were doing when he was born or how we were going to feed him because he was so little!
When I was in the NICU, I learned how to pump and get my milk going because Caleb could not feed from me or feed from a bottle so I was just working on producing and getting my breast milk to come in.
This resulted in a lot of frozen milk! I was connected with the milk bank through the nurses in the NICU – they recommended I donate because I had three months of extra frozen breast milk in my freezer.
Fast Forward…
Caleb is four years old now! He’s no longer that 27-week-old baby that could fit in our hands. He’s a big boy and he’s very active. He loves to learn, talk, run around and just play like other kids do. He has grown up so much and so fast.
My message for milk donors is that your contribution – it’s not just something small. I know it’s a lot of work just to pump, to breastfeed, to give milk in any way. But your contribution is so big and it makes such an impact on these little babies that need it the most!
Keeley is now a three-time milk donor and we are so grateful for her gifts!
